June 13:
Today we Arrived in Madrid- we have been traveling on a plane for 12 hours, plus a few hours to check in and wait for planes.
When we arrived in Madrid we took a bus from the airport to the street 'Velazquez 12' to meet our families that we would be living with for the time we would be spending in Spain. Everyone on the bus was looking out the windows looking and wondering which person would be hosting them, excited yet anxious at the same time. We got off the bus and got our luggage, and our teachers introduced us to our "Senora's". Alyssa (my roomate) and I were greeted with two kisses by our Senora and a big hug. We followed her down many busy streets to the appartment we would be living in. It turns out our appartment was only 5 minutes walking distance from school and right across from the most beautiful park that I have ever been to (El Parque Retiro.)
We settled into our rooms (which turned out to be very difficult as the hallways in the house were big enough to fit only one person, and with our stuffed suitcases and backpacks we had to push ourselves through the narrow halls). The appartment was very nice with a grand entrance, a living room, a dining room, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, 2 decks/porches, and various rooms. Our Senora (whose name was Rosario) was 75 years old and lives with her daughter and two grandchildren, Lucia and Ramon. After taking a short nap and washing up, our Senora had prepared us with a delicous lunch- Paella. Although throughout the trip I loved this delicous dish, I did not have the appetite for it after flying for so long, and could not bring myself to eat as much as we were expected to, which dissapointed our Senora. I learned that Spainards take offense if you do not eat everything that they serve you/ put infront of you, and they just did not understand that 2 people could not eat a meal that could serve 10! Anyways, our first meal was interesting as we got to know a little about Rosario.
That night we took a placement exam at the school (estudio sampere) and after the test Senor Kaplan treated us all to ice cream! This was the first of MANY helados that we enduldged in this summer. After walking around Goya (a main shopping street- similar to Colorado in Old Town) we returned to our houses for dinner. After dinner we were so exhausted we fell asleep in a split second, ignoring the squeeks our beds made everytime we took a breath and the hot weather.
